Addis Ababa, October 8, 2025 — Ethiopia held its 7th Annual Loyal Taxpayers Recognition Ceremony, an event initiated in 2018 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to recognize and appreciate citizens who consistently fulfill their civic duty by paying taxes on time. The ceremony took place as a significant moment to celebrate the contributions of those who have played a vital role in the country's development.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed the attendees at the event, expressing his gratitude to the awardees for their unwavering commitment to the nation. He emphasized how their tax payments have been instrumental in driving visible changes across the capital city.
During his speech, the premier stated, “Last year, we pledged that your tax contributions would be used to invest in essential public goods and national projects that are crucial for our collective progress.” He further noted that the current transformation seen throughout the city is a clear reflection of this promise being fulfilled.
This year’s ceremony honored 700 loyal taxpayers for their contributions during the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year. The awardees were categorized into three levels: 105 Platinum-level, 245 Gold-level, and 350 Silver-level recipients. Their combined efforts resulted in a total tax collection of 900.22 billion Birr for the fiscal year.
In addition to recognizing these taxpayers, the Ministry of Revenue and the Customs Commission introduced several new digital systems aimed at improving efficiency and transparency in tax and customs administration. These systems include:
- Electronic Receipts Administration System – designed to streamline the process of issuing and managing receipts.
- Electronic Clearance System – intended to facilitate faster and more accurate clearance of goods.
- Electronic Customs Management System – aimed at enhancing the overall management of customs operations.
- Electronic Cargo Tracking System – developed to monitor and track cargo movements effectively.
These technological advancements are expected to significantly improve the efficiency of tax and customs processes, reducing delays and increasing transparency for both businesses and individuals.
