His Excellency the President has approved the appointment of Mr. Musah Ahmed as the new Judicial Secretary to the Judicial Service of Ghana. This decision was made in accordance with Article 148 of the 1992 Constitution and following the advice of the Judicial Council.

The legal battle surrounding Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken another turn as the Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned his trial to October 16. This decision came after the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) failed to submit its medical examination report on Kanu’s health status as required by the court.

Justice James Omotosho, presiding over the case, made the adjournment following a request from the Department of State Services (DSS) counsel, Suraj S’aad (SAN). The DSS lawyer informed the court that the NMA had not yet completed its assessment of Kanu’s condition, despite earlier directives from the court.

Kanu is currently facing charges related to terrorism under the Federal Government's legal framework. His trial has been marked by ongoing discussions about his health, which have led to conflicting views from both the prosecution and defense teams.

During previous court sessions, Justice Omotosho ordered the NMA to form an independent medical panel to evaluate Kanu’s health after both sides presented differing perspectives on his medical condition. The prosecution, represented by DSS counsel Awomolo Adegboyega (SAN), argued that Kanu’s health could be managed within the agency’s medical facilities. On the other hand, defense counsel Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) claimed that Kanu’s condition was worsening and requested a transfer to the National Hospital, Abuja, for more appropriate care.

In response to these concerns, the court mandated the NMA to conduct an impartial medical evaluation. This evaluation aims to determine whether the DSS medical facility is adequate for Kanu’s needs or if a transfer is necessary. Additionally, the report is expected to assess whether Kanu is fit to stand trial.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, the DSS counsel requested a one-week adjournment to allow the NMA medical board to finalize its investigation. Since there were no objections from the defense, Justice Omotosho granted the request, stating, “The court is adjourned to October 16 for the report of the Nigerian Medical Association.”

Medical Examination Process and Findings

Meanwhile, the NMA Secretary-General, Dr. Ben Egbo, provided insights into the medical examination process during an exclusive interview with The PUNCH. According to Egbo, the NMA conducted the examination and sent the report to the Attorney General of the Federation.

Egbo explained, “The court gave an order that we should do it. I think, within eight days, and immediately the Department of State Services wrote to us, we summoned a committee of seven doctors with one coordinator, making it eight.”

The medical team consisted of seven doctors from different geopolitical zones of Nigeria, each specializing in various fields such as Ophthalmology, Neurology, Urology, and Gastroenterology. These specialists examined Kanu and compiled their findings into a comprehensive report, which was then submitted to the Attorney General of the Federation.

This report is expected to play a crucial role in determining the next steps in Kanu’s legal proceedings. It will provide an objective assessment of his health condition and whether he is fit to continue with the trial.
